Brainstorming and Mindmapping

We were supposed to use 'maps' to help us get through our thinking process in order to help us generate ideas for our type specimen book. The first mindmap I came up with lead me to thinking about different genres, such as travel, photography, informative, etc. I already knew I wanted to incorporate photographs into the book so I made a second mindmap stemming off of photos this time instead of books. It got me thinking about types of photos whether its a scenic picture of people or a city or whether it goes in the direction of events and political connotations. I came up with 3 ideas for the book: the chicago gay pride parade, artistic photographs or people. After going through options and thinking about the audience I moved onto 2 different ideas: a childrens travel book for the california coast and an events book of chicago.

Polka Dotty

I have now added in the polka dots for the final touches to my combined font of Blackoak and Edwardian. I tried to vary the placement of the dots as well as the sizes. I wanted it to be somewhat random but balanced at the same time.

Combined fonts

I chose to combine the two fonts Blackoak (on the left) and Edwardian (in the middle). Blackoak has more of a bold sense and feel to it without being too blocky. Edwardian has an elegant feel with a touch of carefree with the curls. The combination of the two is supposed to represent my playfulness and the ability to be carefree at times. After disecting the curls I increased the point size so it could mesh with the boldness of the Blackoak without looking out of place. I documented the changes I made to each letter so I could go make to my notes if I needed to remember the alterations I have made and if I further needed to change something to make it fit in with the other letters. I later will add in the polka dots but wanted to concentrate first on the basic combination of the two fonts.
